Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

The practical details on membership, insurance, testing, and what working with Dr. Kanani looks like.

Can you be my primary care doctor?+
Yes. Dr. Kanani offers primary care through a membership model known as Direct Primary Care, where you pay the practice a monthly fee for a direct, ongoing relationship.
Do you accept health insurance?+
Dr. Kanani does not bill health insurance at this time, but all members are required to have insurance to cover lab testing, imaging, and hospital care. We can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
What is functional medicine, and how does it work?+
Functional medicine uses in-depth testing for hormones, gut health, and nutritional status to address the root causes of many chronic conditions. For functional medicine there's no membership fee — it's pay-as-you-go.
How much testing will I need?+
Chronic conditions usually call for in-depth testing to uncover underlying causes; these specialized tests are typically in the range of a few hundred dollars. Standard laboratory testing is covered by your health plan.
How often will you need to see me?+
Appointments are usually spaced six to eight weeks apart, depending on what you're working through.
Will I have access to you between appointments?+
Yes. Email communication with Dr. Kanani is included in the cost of your appointments.
How long does a treatment plan take to work?+
It depends on the condition. Some problems begin to improve within a few weeks; others take many months and require consistent work and effort.
Do you coordinate care with my other doctors?+
Yes — we're glad to coordinate care with your specialists.
Where are you located, and do you offer remote visits?+
The office is at 10024 Newtown Road, Nevada City, CA. Telehealth visits are available for many appointments — please ask when you reach out. (Note for the practice: confirm telehealth details and office hours.)
What if I have an emergency — are you on call?+
No. Dr. Kanani is not available after hours for emergencies. If you have a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
